Why Traveler’s Choice?
For 41 years, Traveler’s Choice has built premium luggages in California for the frequent traveler that wants their bags to survive airline handling.
Eight U.S. airlines - Allegiant, Alaska, Frontier, Hawaiian, JSX, JetBlue, Southwest, and Spirit use Traveler’s Choice as their replacement partner. When an airline damages a passenger’s bag, we are the brand they refer to.
Every carry-on in the picker above weighs under 7.5 lbs. Every checked bag weighs under 9 lbs. This gives you plenty of options to pack what you need and remain under the 50-lb domestic checked limit and well under most international carry-on weight caps (7–10 kg).
For a senior traveler, the difference between a 6 lb carry-on and a 10 lb carry-on is 4 lbs of clothing, necessities, or souvenirs you get to bring along.
Built in features you'll love:
-
Ergonomic handles (Silverwood, Pagosa, Edinburgh II lines) contour to your grip and lock at multiple heights, so you can set the bag to your exact reach.
-
4-wheel 360° spinners roll alongside you rather than dragging behind - easier on shoulders and hips.
-
TSA-approved combination locks on Pagosa and other premium lines, so you never have to manage a small key.
-
Shield 98® anti-microbial lining keeps interior surfaces clean trip after trip.
We have Award-winning design, RedDot Product Design of the Year awards at prices that don’t ask you to spend $700 for a single carry-on.
How to Select Lightweight Luggage

Five features separate genuinely senior-friendly luggage from luggage that’s just light.
- Weight. Target a carry-on around 6 lbs and a checked bag under 8 lbs. Every pound of empty bag is a pound out of your packing allowance. Eight Traveler’s Choice bags clear those thresholds.
- 4-wheel spinners, not 2-wheel rollers. A spinner rolls alongside you upright. A 2-wheel roller drags behind, pulling on your shoulder. Look for ball-bearing wheels and a wide base.
- Handle height matching. Telescoping handles can extend several inches. You’ll typically want luggage that can reach lower to mid torso compared to your height. A contoured handle (like the Silverwood and Pagosa lines) is easier to grip on long airport walks than a thin bar handle on most other luggages.
- Zippers and locks. Double zipper pulls, oversized tabs, and smooth zipper tracks are easier if you need hand grip support. A TSA-approved combination lock removes the need for a small key.
- Quick-access exterior pocket. Medications, passport, and phone should be one-handed reachable without unzipping the main compartment. Pagosa and Silverwood front-pocket designs deliver this.
If you use a cane or walker, test the bag in the store: push it once with one hand and let go. A quality spinner rolls straight; a mediocre one veers.
Carry-On or Checked - Which to Pick

For most senior travelers on domestic flights under one week, a carry-on is the right call. You keep the bag with you, skip the carousel, and exit the airport faster.
For longer trips or international itineraries with generous checked allowances, a sub-9 lb checked bag is the better fit.

International note. Many European and Middle Eastern carriers cap carry-on weight at 7–10 kg (15–22 lbs). All four Traveler’s Choice carry-ons above start under 7.3 lbs empty, which keeps you well within Emirates’ 7 kg limit and most other international carry-on caps.
The four carry-ons in row 1 of the picker run $79.99–$129.99. The four checked bags in row 2 run $89.99–$149.99.
Buying both (one carry-on for short trips and one checked for long) costs less than $280 in many combinations.

FAQ
How light should a carry-on be for a senior?
Aim for around 6 lbs empty. Several Traveler’s Choice carry-ons sit at 6.5–6.9 lbs, with the Silverwood Softside at 6.48 lbs. Going lighter than 6 lbs usually means dropping useful features like TSA locks or expandable zippers. This may be a tradeoff worth considering.
Are 4-wheel spinners worth it?
Yes. A 4-wheel spinner rolls upright next to you instead of dragging behind. That removes the constant shoulder pull of a 2-wheel roller, which adds up over a long terminal walk. All eight bags in the picker above are 360° spinners.
Hard-shell or soft-sided - which is better for seniors?
Hard-shell protects the contents better and is easier to close when fully packed. Soft-sided is lighter and has more give for awkwardly shaped items.
The lightest TC carry-on is the soft-sided Silverwood at 6.48 lbs; the lightest hard-shell carry-on is the Ruma II at 6.6 lbs. The 0.12 lb gap rarely matters. Pick by feature priority, not by shell type. Review our full table up above.
What features help with arthritis or weak grip?
Look for oversized zipper pulls, a TSA-approved combination lock (no small keys), a contoured ergonomic handle, and a bag that stands upright on its own. The Pagosa, Edinburgh II, and Silverwood lines combine all four.
